Esval Miljøpark has undergone a furious development in recent years from an ordinary landfill to a fully modern environmental centre. Advanced technology is in use to recycle and process the raw materials in the waste.
Esval was established as a municipal septic and waste reception site as long ago as 1972. The operation was extended to receive commercial waste from customers outside the municipality from 1990. In 2009/2010 a plant for recycling metal from bottom ash was established at Esval and in 2012 the City of Oslo's biogas plant was ready for trial operation. Following the waste landfill ban in 2009, no "rubbish" is now deposited at the environmental centre, but mainly excavated materials from Oslo and the surrounding areas.
